BIR raids Philippine Vape Festival 2024, confiscates Illicit Vape Products

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. reports an on-going raid of the Philippine Vape Festival 2024 being held in Las Pinas today, August 18, 2024. Surveillance of the event confirmed that there were vape products without internal revenue stamps. Upon seeing vape products without internal revenue stamps, Commissioner Lumagui, together with the BIR Illicit Trade Task Force (ITTF) proceeded to raid the event, and confiscate the illicit vape products.

"We have given the vape industry every warning. The BIR will raid all venues with illicit vape, even on weekends or holidays. We will raid festivals. We will raid public markets. We will raid warehouses. You will face criminal charges for tax evasion. The BIR welcomes all informants, private or public, who have information on locations or events with illicit vape. The BIR Illicit Trade Task Force will act on all verified targets" Commissioner Lumagui stated.

Commissioner Lumagui has been steadfast in the BIR's war against illicit vape. Earlier this month, the BIR raided the Taytay Tiangge Market because of the presence of Flava and other illicit vape. A few weeks ago, the BIR also raided a building in Quezon City where a Flava vending machine was confiscated, the machine was accessible even to minors because the same building housed a gym, dance studio, gymnastics studio, basketball court, cafe & bakery, laundry station, water station, and a restaurant.

Inventory of the illicit vape products confiscated during the Philippine Vape Festival 2024 is still on-going.

“The illicit vape being displayed in this festival shows the brazen attitude of the vape industry against the proper taxation of vape products. They even organized a festival filled with illicit vape. The full strength of the BIR Illicit Trade Task Force will be deployed against this industry” Commissioner Lumagui stated.

BIR marks 120th Anniversary with 100% Nationwide ISO Certification, New Logo, and New Web portal*

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. marks the 120th anniversary of the BIR by presenting its latest landmark achievements. Commissioner Lumagui announced during the anniversary that, for the first time in BIR history, the agency received 100% Nationwide ISO certification on several of its services, a new BIR logo is approved and unveiled, and a new and modern BIR web portal is online.

"The BIR marks its 120th anniversary with achievements worthy of 'Bagong Pilipinas'. Our 100% Nationwide ISO Certification marks the shift of BIR into a more service-oriented agency. Our new BIR logo marks our adaptation to the 21st century. Our new BIR web portal marks our commitment to the digitalization of our services. This victory is not merely that of the BIR; this victory is also that of our taxpayers, who deserve the best in public service," Commissioner Lumagui stated.

The ISO Certification covers both the Operations Group (Revenue Regions, Revenue District Offices) and the Large Taxpayer Service (LTS).

The ISO Certification for the Revenue Regions and Revenue District Offices covered: a) Business Registration Process; b) Process of Retrieval and Verification of Batch Control Sheet Reports and Tax Returns from Authorized Agent Banks; c) Processing and Issuance of Tax Clearance and Certificates; d) Standards on the Processing of One Time Transactions; and e) Processing of tax returns in the Document Processing Division particularly on Document Control and Data Capture Processes.

The ISO Certification for the LTS covered its most important taxpayer service-related processes: a) Registration Process [Certificate of Registration, Authority to Print Receipts, and Books of Accounts]; b) Collection Process [Tax Clearance for Bidding Purposes, and Delinquency Verification Certificate]; and c) ONETT Process [the onerous transfer of shares of stock not traded through the local stock exchange, and the donation of real and personal properties].

The new BIR logo was created through the artistic contributions of both taxpayers and revenuers. It symbolizes the inclusive approach of the BIR dealing with taxpayers, such that certain elements of the new logo came from a taxpayer. The new BIR web portal was developed with the help of the Department of Information and Communications Technology. The new web portal aims to create a balance between convenience in accessing tax information, BIR updates, eServices, and an impression of professionalism and modernity in the 21st century.
